What better time than Halloween to revisit a timeless cult classic?
It all started in a small London theater and soon became an international smash as a major motion picture. Filming of The Rocky Horror Picture Show began in October, 1974, at Bray Studios, England’s famous “House of Horror” and at a 19th century chateau which served once as the wartime refuge of General Charles DeGaulle.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is an outrageous mixed bag of part homage and parody as bits of alien science fiction and horror blend with rock ‘n’ roll and sexual confusion run amok amid the decadent morality of the 70’s. Outlandish (and very entertaining, charming, and talented) characters include the mad “doctor” Frank N Furter, a transvestite from the planet Transexual in the galaxy of Transylvania and played by Tim Curry. Transylvania is the name of a galaxy whose space agents assigned to planet Earth have gathered together for their Annual Transylvanian Convention.
Time Warp dance.
THE STORY The car driven by clean-cut young Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) along with his sheltered and impressionable fiancee Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) develops a flat tire on a foreboding road one night. The light coming from a nearby residence is where Dr. Frank N Furter is in the midst of one of his maniacal experiments – he has created the perfect man, a rippling piece of beefcake named Rocky Horror (Peter Hinwood) within a kinky household presided by a hunchback named Riff Raff (Richard O’Brien), his incestuous sister Magenta (Patricia Quinn), and tap dancing groupie, Columbia (Little Nell).
Brad and Janet struggle with making sense of the scene and debate escaping vs enjoying an adventure into the unexpected and bizarre that includes Eddie (Meatloaf) plowing through the laboratory wall wailing on a saxophone and Dr. Scott (Jonathan Adams) showing up at the castle knowing that Frank N Furter is an alien spy from another galaxy.
Ultimately, Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott are left in a fog and incapable of readjusting to the life they had left behind before that fateful flat tire.
The amazing Tim Curry in action (this guy also sang opera!)
